Digital SLR cameras have brought professional quality photography gear to everyday people. Of course a pro quality Digital SLR camera is only part of what you need to take great pictures. You will also have to know exactly how to use your DSLR camera and that can be a bit more complex with a DSLR than with a consumer quality point and type camera.
And I think even more important than knowing the technicalities of how to use your camera is having a good eye. You need to develop a sense of what will make a good photograph. A good example of this kind of “good eye” can be seen when looking through these Beautiful Pictures by one of the best photographers.
As far as which camera to buy I recommend the Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR in particular. It’s a great SLR camera that has worked for me without any seriously problems for about four years now. It’s also rather cheap by the standards of high quality cameras. Of course you should know that those standards are rather high, it is about $725 and that’s without a lens!
As you educate yourself more about high quality cameras you will find that the lens is extremely important. If your experience comes mostly from point and clicks you are probably used to thinking that the megapixel count is the most important thing about a camera but that’s not the case at all.
With SLRs, the lens is what makes the biggest difference in the quality of your pictures. Really the topic of lenses is too complicated for me to cover in this article, I simply want to make you aware of how important they are and that if you want to get really serious about taking great photos you will have to look into the topic deeply.
Just like with all other skills, you will only become a better photographer with lots of studied practice. You will need to read all about taking pictures and then you will need to take lots of photos testing out all of what you have learned.
