Controversy Is Entertainment - Talk Radio On Broadway

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Talk Radio is a play about a late night radio host, Barry Champlain, who has always been controversial and who is also about to expand his popular talk show from Cleveland to move it to a broader nationwide audience. One night, he faces several callers who make him reveal his true feelings live on air. He is known to be abusive and insulting to his callers, and that is what makes him so popular. There are callers waiting in line to speak to him on air because they want to hear his scathing words and insults. He invites listeners to call him and to tell him what is troubling them, and then he deals with them in a cold and derisive careless manner.

On the show he has to deal with all types of callers such as those who tell him that they are afraid of a garbage disposal, or talk to him about the surgeries they have had, or even one case when a caller is trying to wake up his girlfriend and thinks she is dead. Champlain deals with them all with his sharp tongue and scathing words. Based on his show ratings, his sponsors want to broadcast his show nationwide. This does not please Champlain though and he gets even worse and more perverse on air which scares the sponsors. And when he is asked to tone it down, he gets devastatingly abusive on his show egging his audience to give him their “best shot”.

How The Trick Is Done

This a great mind reading trick and the secret is so subtle, no one will ever guess the method used. Take each matchbook and push the flap of each book in really firmly behind the striking surface. You will find that when a spectator opens a matchbook and tears out a match, he will not push the flap in as tightly as you did. This is the main secret of the trick.

Ask the spectator to look at the cards in each pile and tell you which pile his card is in. Once he has found it, ask him to place the pile in his pocket.

Tell him that he mentally selected a card and there is no possible way that you could know which card he is thinking of. Rub your fingers together and then touch his brow with your first finger. Tell him you are trying to pick up a mental vibration about his card.

Reach into his pocket and pull out one car without looking at it. Toss it on to the table and tell him that is not his card. Reach into his pocket again and pull out another card. Throw that card on to the table and say it is not his card. Finally, pull out the third card and tell him “This is the card you are thinking of”. You are correct.

Liev Schreiber is well known for his powerful performances in Macbeth, Hamlet, Betrayal and Glengarry Glen Ross. He won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, for Glengarry Glen Ross. Director Robert Falls has directed hits like Death Of A Salesman for which he won a Tony Award, as well as Shining City and Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

Tickets for Talk Radio are available from the box office at Longacre Theater. You could also order tickets on the phone or online. Considering that the play has a it has a limited run planned, it will be difficult to get tickets but if you book in advance then you can avoid being disappointed. A weekday show would probably be easier to get tickets for than a weekend

Talk Radio was first staged at the Public Theater in 1987 and seeing its success there, Bogosian decided to revive the play on Broadway. The play had its first preview on February 15, 2007 and it opened at Longacre Theater on March 11, 2007. The play is directed by Robert Falls and the cast includes Liev Schreiber as the acid-tongued Barry Champlain, Stephanie March as Linda MacArthur, Peter Hermann as Dan Woodruff and Michael Laurence as Stu Noonan. Incidentally, Michael Laurence stands in for Liev Schreiber in a couple of performances.

So, how do you know which card is his? It is simple. The card he is thinking about will always be the middle card of the three! No matter what card he picks, it will always be the middle card. That is the secret!

Knowing this, you can pull out the cards on either side of it first and then pull out the middle card for your big finish.

You should perform this trick at a quick pace, so the spectator does not have any time to work out the card positions in his mind

Finding a Card in a Spectator’s Pocket! How to Do Card Tricks

criss angel y mitad de mujer

This trick has a terrific impact on any audience and will make people wonder if you really are telepathic!

How It Looks To The Audience

The magician gives a spectator three books of paper matches and then turns his back to him. The magician tells the spectator to remove a match from one of the books and then close up the book again. He is not to say which book he has removed the match from. After he has done this, the magician tells him to mix the books together.

Ask him to place his pile back on the table. Then place spectator’s pile in between the other two piles i.e. in the middle. Hold the pile of fifteen cards face down and deal five cards on to the table, one at a time, in a row, from left to right.

Again working from left to right, deal another card on top of each of the five cards. Then deal a third card on top of each of the five cards.

So, when you turn around, you tell the spectator that you will try to use the power of your mind to find out which book he removed the match from. You then take each book between your thumb and first finger and hold it to your forehead. Your thumb should be on the flap of the matchbook and your first finger should be on the back of the book. As you bring each matchbook up to your forehead, you secretly try pushing the flap down towards the striking surface. The flap that moves slightly will be the one that he has opened.

After you have held each matchbook to your head, deliberate for a moment, and then dramatically point to the one you know the spectator has torn a match from.

This trick can be made to seem even more impossible if you close your eyes during the sequence where you are holding each matchbook to your forehead. From an audience’s point of view, there just does not seem to be any rational explanation for how the trick can be done
