Tips On How To Photograph Pets

Taking the photographs of your cats can be an interesting hobby I would like to share my experience and self-learned tips so you can do it too! The casual photos you take while you are with your cat will turn to be some interesting and rare photo.

I want to clarify that I am not a professional photographer. If you are an owner of a digital camera you can spend your leisure time taking the photos of cats and dogs. I have won many photo contests and I’ve had a couple of my photos displayed in art galleries, after I figured out how to take great photos and how to make my cats want to pose for the camera!

First of all, you need to have the right back ground. The type of back grounds for pet photography should be chosen carefully and should not be cluttered. A backdrop can be ideal for the situation. You can easily make one. Use a dark blue or black sheet or a piece of dark material. The back drop should be in the form of a board with more than 3 feet wide on the sides and 2 feet over  the top of the pet. some photographers have the habit of green screens and this will work in most situations.

If you choose to use a board for your back drop, then drape the material up over the board to have about 3 feet on each side of the subject and at least 2 feet above the head of your subject. You can also use the back side of your sofa if a back drop of the correct size is not available. The idea is to place the cat in the middle of the frame so that the surroundings are covered by the back drop completely. Take out any wrinkles by smoothing or using tape to adhere to the back of the board. A color that matches with the color of the cat and the back drop should be chosen for the material for your pet to sit or stand. You should ensure that all other parts of the covered by the back drop except the full body of the cat.

Next, find the right lighting. If you have a couple of lamps to light up the background, that will help. You should ensure than no shadows are falling on the subject. Use natural lighting when possible, and try to take your photos during the daytime. Add lighting as needed. Most of the photographers relay on the day light for taking their best photos. The best place to take a photo is near a large window, with natural light, or if possible outdoors. You can compose your frame such that the pet is in the centre and the remaining part is covered by the dark colored back drop.

It is best not to use a flash. Using a flash on your camera tends to make the pet’s eyes seem to light up or glow, and it can ruin the photo. Plus your pet usually won’t like the flash. The back drop should be maintained clean so that there is spots or hair. It will show up on the photo later, and it will distract from it.
