Learning to Sing is Easy if You Know How

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I have often heard it remarked that people are born with the ability to sing and it isn’t something you can learn.  This implied that anyone who doesn’t spring out of the womb singing like Mariah Carey should just give up.  Such nonsense!  It is easy for anyone to learn to sing and bring out their own unique voice if you receive the right training.

If you are considering hiring a vocal coach then depending on your current ability you may have to spend a thousand dollars or more which may be a little expensive for most people.  Most vocal coaches teach you things you dont really need to know because you don’t probably don’t want to be an opera singer.

It is a fact that the majority of vocal coaches are failed professionals who have suffered for their art without success. They want to teach their students the rigid art of singing but that may not be what you want. You might just want to learn how to sing so you can sound good at the next karaoke night in which case a vocal coach isn’t for you.

This type of vocal coaching can turn many students away from learning how to sing.  Feeling like you are a young student again with a strict teacher can make the experience uncomfortable but many singing tutors simply dont know any better or how to get the best out of their students.

Most people have tried teaching themselves to sing with the aid of CDs or DVDs.  These methods are fine to a certain degree but they tend to be blanket techniques, a one size fits all approach to learning how to sing. In fact, you may do more harm than good to your voice by using these techniques.  So which way is best?

Even these learn how to sing materials often fall way short of what the student expects or wants.  Many of the teaching aids contain stuffy exercises and regimes that seem to imply that everyone wishes to learn how to sing opera.

The majority of people would just like to be able to sing a little better and have a nicer sounding voice.  It would be pointless if we all sounded the same don’t you agree?  If you look at some of the most charasmatic singers down the years (especially in the modern pop era) you will find that most of them have their own unique style which immediately identifies them.  And thats what you should be looking for from yourself too.

Make sure that your passion drives you and you never give up on your ambition.  If you love to sing and it is a part of who you are then you can and will improve.  With the right training you can get up confidently infront of many people and amaze them with your wonderful, but unique singing style.
